The Art School at Old Church is an art school and fine art gallery in Bergen County, NJ (North Jersey) offering fine art and craft classes for adults, teens, children and families, as well as workshops, art exhibits, outreach programs.

The Art School at Old Church was established in 1974 as a non-profit, nonsectarian cultural resource center. A band of artists and friends seeking to start a community art school saw promise in a local 19th-century church building. Through their hard work and dedication, the group transformed the old church into a center for artistic learning and enrichment. Today, the Art School continues to offer educational and cultural experiences that enrich the local and regional community.

The mission of the Art School at Old Church is to improve the quality of life in the community and region through a variety of educational and cultural offerings. Check out our open calls for artists below.

The Art School at Old Church is pleased to announce the 28th anniversary of The New Jersey Small Works Show. The exhibition celebrates artists working in a small format. This year, the exhibition is open to artists nationwide to increase diversity and have local New Jersey artists interact with artists from across the country.

Artist Eligibility • Open to all artists nationwide.

Artwork Eligibility • Artwork, including frame and/or base, cannot exceed 15 inches in any dimension. All two-dimensional work must be wired and ready to hang. Accepted work may be, but is not limited to: painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, glass, collage, prints, photography, polaroid transfers or mixed media.  Works previously exhibited at the Mikhail Zakin Gallery will not be accepted.

Image Submission • All work will be juried from digital images submitted online.  All submissions must be completed by 12:00 AM on May 9, 2017. Artists may submit up to 4 images for $25.00, additional images at $5.00 each, limit of 6 images per artist. All fees are non-refundable.

Englewood Hospital and Medical Center (EHMC), is a non-profit hospital in Englewood, NJ whose mission is to deliver the highest quality health care to the community. Through a special collaboration with the Art School at Old Church, EHMC will provide exposure for the work of local artists in designated areas of the hospital. EHMC recognizes the healing potential of art; the display of art will enhance EHMC’s culture of compassion and humanism in medicine, contributing to the comfort and wellbeing of it’s patients and visitors. 

Artist Eligibility • Open to residents of Bergen, Hudson, Essex, and Passaic Counties in NJ and Rockland County in NY.

Artwork Eligibility • All 2-dimensional artwork under 5’ x 5’ will be considered.

Image Submission • Artists may submit up to 6 images for $20, additional images +$5/image. All fees are non-refundable

Sales • Sales are encouraged. 20% of the proceeds from sales will benefit the Art School at Old Church and the Art of Healing program at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center. Please indicate the price of all work or mark NFS for Not For Sale. 

Exhibition Dates • Works submitted by June 2, 2017, will be considered for exhibition from DATE - DATE. Artists will be contacted individually regarding future exhibition dates. 

Agreement • Selected work must be securely framed and read to hang. Selected work must be delivered to the Art School at 561 Piermont Rd, Demarest, NJ on DATE - DATE and picked up DATE - DATE. The Art School at Old Church reserves the right to reject works no satisfactorily represented by the images submitted or artwork that arrives in a condition deemed unsuitable for hanging. Submissions of entries to this competition constitutes agreement by the entrant to these conditions.
